LAB II: FORMANTS

Portuguese Vowel Reduction

Phonetically, are /ε/ and /e/ neutralized to /i/ (i.e., the same as /i/)? Also / /, /o/, /u/? Hypothesis 1: Final /ε/, /e/in words have the similar or same F1 and f2 with the final /i/ , while the final / /, /o/also have the similar or same f1 and f2 with final /u/.

Mean: we measure 3 groups disyllabic words end with /ε/, /i/and /e/, each groups has 6 words and been uttered by 2 speakers. The f1 and f2 of each final vowel will be measured and record into EXCEL. The mean of each groups’final vowels will be calculated to make comparison. Similar, to make comparison of / /, /o/ and /u/.

Hypothesis 2: Stressed /ε/, /e/ in words will be backer and lower than the stressed /i/ in words(f1 will be higher and f2 will be lower), while the stressed / /, /o/ will be lower and fronter than /u/(f1 and f2 will both be higher).

Mean: we measure 3 groups disyllabic words contain stressed/ε/, /i/and /e/, each groups has 6 words and been uttered by 2 speakers. The f1 and f2 of each stressed vowel will be measured and record into EXCEL. The mean of each groups’streesed vowels will be calculated to make comparison.

How do vowels in final (unstressed) position compare with stressed vowels, in terms of vowel quality?

Hypothesis 3: There is no obvious difference in vowel quality between stressed /i/ and unstressed /i/( there is no oblivious difference between their f1 and f2).

Mean: one group of 6 disyllabic words contains stressed and unstressed /i/ has been uttered by 2 speakers,the f1 and f2 of unstressed and stressed are recorded seperated into EXCEL.The means of f1 and f2 by 2 speakers will be calculated to make comparison.

Hypothesis4: final /e/ and /ε/will be higher and fronter than stressed /e/and and /ε/(f1 will be lower and f2 will be higher).

Hypothesis5: Final / /, /o/and /a/ will be lower and backer than stressed / /, /o/ /a/ (f1 will be higher and f2 will be lower.)

Hypothesis6: Final /u/ will be lower than the stressed /u/(f1 will be higher)
