Unit Five Numbers

The first period

Ⅰ Teaching objects : Have the children know the numbers from one to five

The children can count the things.

Learn the words: doll, train, ball, teddy bear, car

Ⅱ Teaching key points : The pronunciation of the five numbers

Ⅲ Teaching difficult points : Structures: How many? One, two, three, four, five What are they?

Ⅳ Teaching procedure

1. Warm-up

Review colors-if possible, take the children outdoors, to a park or a garden, or a place where there are plants of various colors. Say, “Point to something (blue).” Have the children point to,for example, the sky. Continue for the colors yellow, red, green, and brown.

2. Previews

Hold up a pencil and ask, “What’s this?” Elicit, “There is one pencil.” Say, “That’s right. How many pencils? ” Say, “There is one pencil.” Present the number word one, and have the children repeat after you.

Hold up two pencils and ask, “How many pencils?” Say, “There are two pencils.” Present the number word two. Repeat the procedure and present the numbers three, four, and five.

Review the numbers by holding up different numbers of pencils and eliciting the number from the children in a choral drill, then from individual children.

3. Presentation of new language

Hold up the flashcard for train and have the children look at it. Say, “It’s a train.” Model the word train at least twice, now have the children repeat after you.

Repeat the step above, using the flashcards to present the other new vocabulary: car, doll, ball, and teddy bear.

Pin up the Poster. Ask, “Who can you see?” Elicit, “Ken, Ann, and Mocky.” Say, “Where are they?” They are in the children’s bedroom.”

Discuss the picture. Ask children what the characters are doing, how they feel, and so on. Point to the doll and ask, “What’s this?” Elicit, “Doll,” or “It’s a doll.” Repeat the procedure for train, ball, teddy bear, and car.

4. Story

Have the children open their books. Say, “Now we are going to hear what Mocky said.” Have the class look at the picture as you play the tape. Play the tape again and have the children repeat the words.

Discuss why Mocky is looking worried (he thinks the two trains are going to crash, because he doesn’t realize that Ken has the remote control to direct them safely).

5. Touch and say

Review the numbers one through five by holding up the flashcards for each one and eliciting each number. Do this until you are sure that the children can recognize each numeral.

Have children open their books and direct their attention to the numbers shown down the right-hand side of the page. Play the tape, and have them point to each number as they hear it.
