In 1993, Anthony Appiah put forward the notion, thick translation, in a first published essay. At that time, what he pointed out is that translation that seeks with its annotations and its accompanying glosses to locate the text in rich cultural and linguistic context, is eminently worth doing. Besides this, he also thought that the purpose of providing such voluminous background information is to engender in the TT reader a deeper respect for the source culture and greater appreciation for the way that people of other backgrounds have thought and expressed themselves.
In china, most of us have heart Evolution and Ethics, which Yan Fu applied abundant thick translation. So, maybe, “thick translation” seems new, but the phenomena exist in many translated works. Now, we have to apply it in the literature passages, technological passages and so on.Because people from different culture or different fields have to understand these words though those notes and annotations, which is very easy to understand. Let’s take the translation of idiom as an example. When translate the “草木皆兵” into English, if we just transliterate as “to see every bush and tree as an enemy solider”, the English reader will be frustrated about why and how. If we add the “a state of extreme nervousness/to be afraid of one’s own shadow”, the
